Why don't we just make up a band. Everybody records one partition of a song desired to cover and lets all mix it up to make our own covers.

i've been trying to get you guys doing that for years. there's like a bajillion musicians on here. there should be a Neskimos record label already. hell; i'm not even a musician and i live in a recording studio.

work together. rule the world. it's that easy.

set high standards for yourself and hold on for dear life.

  1. Musical talent
  2. Decent recording gear + space
  3. Know-how

For an internet-based collaboration to work, everybody involved needs all qualities. Most people have one (music talent) - but the recording part is pretty difficult and/or expensive.

I mean, you can pick up a FocusRite 2i2 for ~$100 at Best Buy today and start recording like a baller. If you look around a bit you could get something better and/or cheaper. I have a 2i4 that I picked up at a pawn shop for ~$125, it's fantastic. I can record myself playing sax and have it sound really, really good.

It seems like most of the forums can't afford to swing $100+ on a hobby, though :-/

That third item, know-how - you need folks that have a decent sense of song composition, or you need somebody to take on that role. And it's pretty hard to compose a song when you're not all in a room. Like, I know I don't have it - I can play, and I can record with decent equipment, but I need somebody to tell me what to do. And it's way easier to say "Yeah no I don't like that try this instead" right then and there, instead of sitting down, recording something, sending it out, getting feedback, rinse repeat.

It's a very, very cool idea, but when you start getting into the nitty-gritty of *how* to do it, it's pretty hard to do.

Trombonist, checking in!

Also, I'm told I'm pretty good at scream metal, and apparently I can also sing in tune. Not amazing showmanship, but I am in tune, at least.

I can play guitar terribly, I suck at recording but I'm ok at writing songs.

i can make some pretty good sounds with software, but can't do much with them yet.

@napalm: those figures sound good, but i call bullshit on people not having $100 to drop on a hobby.
and if you don't: buy a big ass thing of ramen and suffer for a month. there's plenty of things that can be cut-out/back to save up $100.
i know some are in tighter spots than others, but if you're interested in making music and have a bar habit: stop for one week. there's your money.

it's really just about wanting to do it; and how badly compared to other things. nobody has room for everything in their life. when i'm writing code i'm not playing video games or fishing for prospective dates: i'm writing code.

i just want it known how much potential there is here. we're all pretty mature now and, combined, we have a pretty diverse skill set. if we chose to apply that: it will work.

back to the topic though: For Great Justice sounds like a bad-ass label name.
"who do you work for?"

I do believe i have offered to take on number 3 numerous times, making number 2 is irrevelant. And since when is number 1 necessary? Have you heard Battle? :bluev:

I can play Sax (and by proxy most similar woodwinds, IE, Clarinet), but don't currently possess any of said instruments because of needing to fund my move across the country last year.

I can also sort of sing. I used to be good at it, but am severely out of practice.

Also I own an ocarina, a harmonica, and a celtic tin whistle. I haven't fucked with them much, but could probably put something together.

But you can scream about spreading legs for rock.

Also something about a whale and a BJ, I recall from years and years ago.

neither can nickleback. and a staggering number of musicians are fed their songs and wardrobe from their label. like almost every country singer.

if there's one thing i've learned: you can't let not having a fucking clue what you're doing keep you from your interests.

one day i decided to poke though some game source code: knowing nothing about java. every problem i ran into: i sought or devised a solution.
i take an approach to learning that is the exact opposite of the way we're traditionally taught. this take doesn't limit my capabilities to the things i already know but, instead, are only confined by my interests and motivation towards my goal.

Umm... I think you played it once when we were drunk. Like, 9 years ago or something.

So I'm in the process of migrating stuff from For Great Justice's old web server to my new one, and I noticed a few things:

1) neskimos.com no longer exists :(

2) Trying to find NESkimos tracks online is pretty hard. There's a bandcamp page which we know for sure is official, and soundclick is still up. I noticed a soundcloud page and youtube videos, but I don't know how official any of that is - the NESkimos facebook page doesn't link to any of it (but it does link to forgreatjustice.org yay!)

I'm a bit out of date on everything, so I'm asking you guys for a favor - can you go to http://forgreatjustice.org/neskimos and see if there's anything missing? Any tracks at all, etc? I know I'm missing Phatt Island and Alive Still, for instance.

I'm thinking about building a new site with a fancy lil' audio player and whatnot.

Also, all we can get are the old-school MP3s - any chances of getting FLAC files out of the band? Shit, they could send me a bunch of WAVs and I'll get them encoded to FLAC and higher-quality MP3s, not a problem! Listening to 128kbps MP3s encoded in 2002 is rough :(

Did we ever get a recording of them doing ATHF?

Also, I've got Phatt Island. Might be a demo studio version, though, I'm not sure if it's complete. I got it off FGJ a few months back or something, I think.

I've got that giant-ass compilation Kliq put together a while back. It has everything up until the stuff they did recently, IE, no "Alive Still" or anything later than that. Otherwise, it's got all recorded live shows and albums.

Double postin, cuz I like living on the edge.

We are currently, just chilling. I wouldn't say we're broken up, I also wouldn't say we couldn't play a show right now, if the Russian mafia pointed cabbage sling shots at our heads.

A tiny Mario still lives in my heart and hopes to play drums again with the guys. Who knows right?
