Did you guys get a keyboard? I like it.

Also, I'm finding the movement from instrumental to lyrical original pieces pretty interesting. Your voices work together really nicely.

obviously its not done mixing, but since a proper beta tester will tell you know what might be bugs. By the way, I am in no way close to ever being possibly considered a musician, so keep that in mind.

It seems like the vocals are way louder than the music.

Other than that, it is VERY catchy and is a very fun song.

At first I thought the vocals were distracting, but as the song went on, I got used to it. The palm mute riffs sound way too muffled and dry in this version. Overall, I liked it.

Needs more saxophone!

No, but seriously, I like it.

I don't like it very much. The parts where the music is actually recognizable are alright. Maybe it's just something that can be fixed with mixing, but the vocals really dominate everything, which leads me to my next point. The lead vocals are annoying and remind me of Panic at the Disco. Also, as far as the lyrics are concerned: I don't see the need to cook up lyrics for a Dr. Mario song, they also remind me of Panic at the Disco, or some similarly silly mid-2000's band. I can't think of a way to make any of that more constructive. Sorry.

The more I think about it, the more I wish it were more in line with your earlier stuff (read: heavy metal with no vocals). Some of the best parts of the original song aren't particularly heavy in this version. Example: starting at 3:26. I don't know what instruments (keyboard? synth?) or effects you're using at this part, but it's sandwiched between heavier stuff, and it makes me wish that this part were being shredded on a guitar. Same thing with the part where the vocals end around 2:12. No idea what you're doing there, but it's probably the most memorable part of the original song, and I wish it were guitar, rather than whatever it is.

My wife just walked by, knowing nothing about the band except that I'm on this forum. "Is that The NESkimos? I thought they made heavy metal, that sounds like bad emo." I had to do a lot of explaining.

So there ya have opinions from someone who has enjoyed this band for nearly 10 years, and someone who knows nearly nothing about you guys, or video game music in general, both of whom have no technical background in music. I'm interested to hear where the song goes from here.

Yeah. I really liked the last one you guys put out, but this...not so much, at least so far.

Where is the thread for that? I can't find it, and now I'm really curious to hear it.

This was the song in question.

On a second listen:

Firstly, this song does kinda switch genres a lot. It switches from Panic!-esque to sweet-ass heavy metal, then a space-lounge/rock fusion, then switches back. It's like three songs spliced up then sandwiched together again.

1:44 or so is way better than the first part, and 1:53 gets even better. There's guitar playing the offbeats during that time, and the vocals have a lot of syncopation going on. It's like I'm listening to nothing but offbeats. 1:44 is where the offbeat guitar isn't as noticeable, and it drops out entirely at 1:53. I have a hard time picking out words in most songs as it is. The first two minutes of vocals are pretty much lost on me, not because of a mixing problem, I just can't concentrate on them when that offbeat guitar is going, too.

The synth at 3:26 (what I'm referring to as the space-lounge section) is neat and all, and I'm a fan of experimentation, but in this case, it's adding a third genre, which is probably too many.

I'm a fan of that space-lounge section, but I think it'd be better if the whole song were like that. Or if the whole song were metal.

What I'm getting at is that I'm really, really not a fan of complicated vocal patterns on top of syncopated guitar.

I'm not gonna say a band should never experiment because stagnation is horrible for any artist. That said, I know when you guys were experimenting during the Berserker album it seemed more about matching game music with different styles. I think that's a great route. Adding lyrics to the mix? That works really well do, as is evident by "Girl" and "Norfair Tenement Blues"
I don't think that mixing multiple styles and lyrics all into the same song works quite as well. That's not to say it's a bad song. I love Dr. Mario and I think you can write lyrics and a decent song about anything. The shift in style and tone is a bit drastic. Maybe it's just because of the early mix. Maybe it's just the styles chosen.

I think this could be something awesome if it had more consistency to it, I suppose. As for now, it's just alright.

You guys have proven that you are a reliable sounding board.

The issues I've heard called out are entirely the right ones, and every single comment I've read like, "yep, that's something I've thought or said out loud."

When I posted Girl, it wasn't because I was looking for feedback so much as I was anxious to share something awesome with y'all.

When I posted this one, it was against my better judgement; it's really not done yet. Not even close. For instance, the solo bit is absolutely going to be guitar; the keyboard is a placeholder. Likewise for many other things in the mix. Also the tempo is wrong, also we are still playing around with basically everything.

Good news, though, everyone! We are in early stages of development, and we can easily course-correct with minimal cost.

So, I'd put to you a challenge:

WHAT video game songs deserve a lyrical treatment? Links are welcome. Personal stories even more are welcomer.

If you're worried about representing games that deserve a non-lyrical treatment, don't worry. Sky Shark, Maniac Mansion, and Shademan will do just fine on their own. Already. Jesus.

I am already working on Sky Shark, but I'm telling you right now, I will never play those licks with my human hands. Go ask Danimal.

Maniac Mansion, yes. Just yes.

I will finish Shademan; I view it as a civic duty at this point.

I think Stone Tower from Majora's mask would do well with something lyrical

And, of course, Devil's Lab

Maybe something from Demon's Crest?

I'd like to see/hear Star Fox get some love, It's a series about anthropormorphic animals flying spaceships to save the galaxy, it almost writes itself.

Earthbound is almost a no brainer, but I think there is some odd meat on those Bubble bobble bones. Some sort of Dante's Inferno-esk interpretation of going down further and further into the bowels of hell.

I think the Donkey Kong Country games have a lot of lyric-friendly music.

Can we get any hints dropped on what you'll be covering from there? I still think that the opening and ending theme as a medley would be absolutely boss. It aches to have someone metal the fuck out of it so badly.

But, seriously, anything from that game would be fucking amazing.

Oh, also, I think I should say, in all fairness, the first time I heard Norfair, I wasn't really big on it. But, the lyrics and the aesthetics of the song really grew on me after awhile. Actually, it's probably one of my favorites by you guys now. It's a show stealer when you guys do it live, for sure.

So, I welcome any lyrical songs you guys want to throw out there.

Also, also, that in mind, I've heard you do Alice In Chains as a sound check a few times now, and if you've got some extra time to dick around in the studio, I'd love to hear a recorded version of that. So many of their songs have awesome parts for multiple vocals, and I really like the way you've been able to harmonize on Norfair, so I'd love to see these two things together.

SKY KID totally deserves lyrics.

So does anything from Toejam and Earl. Aquajam from T&E2 could be particularly cool.

OMG SKY SHARK FOR REAL!?!

FANTASTIC!

just something to listen to to get an idea how guitar might work. The guy Lobos from like 7 Austin TX bands did a decent job.

its good, but man, i want the whole band experience.

As for words... I have 4 words for you. Star Fox Rock Opera

there i said it.

I will research more lyricable songs.

oh cool, unfinished unmastered demos. you know, those things you can't share with anyone who doesn't make music because they don't know how to listen to them. It's a privelege and some of you are rude yo.

i've heard 0 problems that won't be fixed by a cohesive mix. it's a good song, almost as good as girl (which lost points because of the song of storms :redv:).

i dig it.

I'd love to hear some old school NESkimos soon though. Any plans on doing the entire Megaman 2 OST? I remember that being a plan before the band died in Iraq for a few years, and I mean... You've already done, like, half of it...
