I'll be honest, I haven't really checked this forum much in the past year, or two. I've been busy with life, working, a relationship, and some health shit. Still, I wanted to update everyone on what's been going on with me lately.

What have I been doing?
After getting my masters degree in the Spring of 2013, I've jumped around between a few educational jobs. I taught calculus at Stony Brook University for a semester, then got a job at a high school on Long Island for a year and a half. As I was moving to Brooklyn last summer, I needed a job in NYC. I was lucky enough to get a job at the National Museum of Mathematics in August of last year, and I've been working there ever since.

Why did I move to Brooklyn?
Well, my girlfriend lives there, and we moved in together. I'm in Sunset Park. It's a nice enough neighborhood, but we're still waiting for the gentrification to move in.

Health shit? What's up?
Well, last fall I wasn't feeling so great. I was abnormally tired and exhausted all the time, to the point where walking up a flight of stairs would be a struggle. I was abnormally thirsty, drinking in excess of two gallons of water a day. I was also eating tons of food and not gaining any weight (I was actually losing weight). I went to the doctor finally in November (after waiting for my health insurance to kick in). I got a physical, had blood work done, and was told I'd hear back with the results in a week. My doctor called me the next morning. The exchange went something like this:

Doc: Where are you right now?
Me: I'm at work.
Doc: Okay, here's what you need to do. You need to go to the nearest hospital right this second and admit yourself to the ER.
Me: Uhh...
Doc: You have diabetes. You need insulin and electrolytes immediately.
Me. Uhh... okay.

So, I told my boss, and left work for the nearest hospital. When I got there they took more blood and informed me that my blood sugar was in excess of 600 mg/dL. (Normal blood sugar should average around 100 mg/dL.) Apparently, I should have been in a coma with blood sugar levels that high. I was admitted and spent 48 hours in the hospital, getting poked and prodded with needles almost constantly during that time. At some point in the last few years my pancreas had stopped producing insulin, so I couldn't process any carbs or sugar I was eating. Essentially eating a no-carb diet (while eating all the carbs I wanted), I lost nearly 80 pounds over the course of two years. All the sugar in my blood couldn't be used for anything, so I was just pissing it out, making me extremely dehydrated; hence all the water consumption. Also, because my muscles couldn't use any sugar for energy, I was constantly weak and exhausted.

I was informed I had developed Type-I Diabetes, and that I would require insulin injections before every meal, and before bed. When I asked one doctor how, or why, this happened she merely replied, "You just have bad luck." Fair enough.

Overall, it's not a bad disease to have. It's something you can control. It's taken a few months, but my blood sugar has finally come down to normal levels, and it's been fairly easy to manage. I just can't eat crazy sweets and really starchy foods like potatoes, white rice, and pasta.

But then, more health shit started to emerge. In January I started developing really bad burning pain in my feet. I went to two podiatrists, before being referred to a neurologist, who initially diagnosed me as having Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP), another auto-immune disorder wherein the body starts attacking and destroying the myelin around the nerves in the feet and hands. I received some treatment, which didn't really work, before finding out I actually likely don't have CIDP (thankfully), and simply had normal diabetic neuropathy, coupled with a pinched nerve in my lower back, which was causing a lot of weakness in my left foot. Okay, not as bad, but it still sucks. I can't really wear socks or shoes because of the pain, and I've been on disability since mid-February. I'm working on getting my insurance to cover a perscription for Lyrica (apparently a miracle drug for nerve pain) and seeing a spinal specialist about treating the pinched nerve in my back. I should be able to recover and get back to work in another month or so, although we'll see. I've been feeling much better lately, which is good, although the pain is still there, and I can only really get around outside with sandals. The pain is worst at night, but I've been sleeping more and more these past few weeks.

Okay, enough health shit. What else has been going on?
Well, I went on two great trips last year. One to the pacific northwest, and another to Iceland and Amsterdam. Yes, I smoked weed in Washington state and in Amsterdam. Yes, the weed is much better in Amsterdam.

Iceland is, hands-down, the greatest place I've ever been. I mean, look at this shit:

There are more photos on my facebook page, which mostly everyone here is privy too.

Glad I went when I could still walk pain-free. Amsterdam was dope too.

Did I miss anything? I don't know. I hope everyone is doing alright.

Sorry to hear about your health problems but it sounds like you have it under control.
Sounds like you're doing well regardless, so that's good to hear. Iceland does look nice.

That fucking auto-immune deseases. I feel ya, bub! I have Multiple Sclerosis and it's doing the same thing to my overall nerves. Good thing i'm medicated or else i'd just be worst than now. Just follow the posology and you'll be fine. Amazing pictures there my friend and i'm so happy life's fun in some ways :). This board is slowly coming back from the dead and I'm starting to like it.

Hey, man, late to the party here, but, congrats the getting your master's degree! Sorry to hear about all the health problems, but it sounds like you're making the best of it.

I think we're steam friends, have we added each other on Facebook yet? PM me about it if we haven't.

Shit, after doing a quick search on the board I noticed you posted about this like 6 years ago or so. I feel like I've been living under a rock!

So sorry to hear about that, but it looks like you've got it under control :\m/:

And Bubble Man - awesome to see you too! Looks like the old gang is coming back! Woot|
