Since there's no *band* to keep this community together, we need to do moar stuff together!

Actually, I re-titles this forum to be mostly about arranging games to play together and that kind of thing.

Borderlands 2, SWOTOR, Diablo III.

I'm happy to run a server of almost anything if enough people ask for it <3

I'm down for a game night. I'm open for pretty much anything including a frag night. Unreal tournament or anything. I'm down for it. I can also get crew from #netplay to join our gaming to add an extra edge.

wtf. no you don't. the server is packaged with the client.
you have to rent a server if you want someone to host it for you. just like every other VOIP system.
i have a server running right now and i paid $0 for it.

axon requires an account with them and does not have its own server software.

but axon is still free

i dont understand how you can run a mumble server yourself? All the stuff i've seen says you need to pay someone to host it.

when you install it you go into the custom settings and select to install the server with it. click the icon and you have a server running. edit the config just like any other voip server. why would they have free open source software for win/os/linux and not include the server?

tell whoever told you mumble was a payservice that they are an idiot who never checks custom install settings.

well it uses resources from my machine, so running a server would decrease its functionality wouldnt it?

only one person needs the server. the difference is negligible. a web browser being open eats about 40 times the memory of the server.

A common misconception about servers.

Most people hear "server" and think "big, badass machine." The next logical step is "if I want to run a server, I need a big, badass machine, because that's what a server is" Which kinda makes sense.

Here's the thing, though - the definition of "server" isn't "a big, badass machine." A server is any machine that provides some kind of service. It doesn't necessarily have to be big or badass. My computer at home is a server -- it's running SSH so I can remote into it and do all kinds of neat things.

Now, depending on what you want to do dictates what kind of machine you need to run.

You wanna run a web server that handles thousands of connections at once? You'll probably need a lot of hardware, all dedicated to the task. And even that's not necessarily true, depending on whether or not you're serving up static content vs dynamic content.

You wanna run a mumble server that's good for a few people? You could probably do that on your home machine. Or on a server you already have access to. Or whatever.

In this case -- I wouldn't recommend running a VoIP thing on your home machine, not because it's gonna eat up all your hardware resources, but because most ISPs ToS explicitly state you're not supposed to do that kinda thing. Also, depending on the speed of your home connection, it could be pretty laggy/unreliable.

But if you've got a pretty badass internet connection, then go for it.

Or just host it on whatever stuff Fallout's got. I'm sure if you ask nicely he'll set it up.

wow. really? what homo faggot ISPs do this?
or am i just really spoiled with time warner?
http://help.twcable.com/html/twc_sub_agreement.html
whose only real restrictions are: don't share your service with other households and be "reasonable".

i'm not saying i don't believe you. i've had unbelieveably shitty ISPs before.
piss in the face of reason, violate their own damned contract, and cover it up shitty.
i've just never heard of a VOIP host causing a TOS violation before.

Where they usually get you is this (taken from the Acceptable Use Policy on that page you linked:)
Quote:
The ISP Service may not be used to engage in any conduct that interferes with Operator's ability to provide service to others, including the use of excessive bandwidth.

or maybe under this:
Quote:
Unless you have specifically subscribed for commercial grade service, the ISP Service is provided to you for personal, non-commercial use only. The service cannot be used for any enterprise purpose whatsoever whether or not the enterprise is directed toward making a profit. If it is your intention to use this service for these purposes, please contact Operator to inquire whether commercial grade service programs are available.

It's not explicit, I guess, but it's kind of implied -- if you're running some service and hogging up bandwidth, they'll disconnect you. Or alternatively, if you're providing a service, they'll consider that an "enterprise purpose."

Either way -- it really all depends on your usage. Running a mumble server while you and your friends play a game? Probably fine.

Running some kinda Mumble server 24/7 for a decent-sized group of people? It's probably worth it to get a VPS. For the uptime, if nothing else.
