Okay, so, I've been wanting to do this for awhile. There's two game modes that I've seen that sound like the most promising, but we'd need probably 6 players total to do it right, at least.

Kill The King

Overview:
3 vs 3 teams
1 Hardcore Character is the King.
King is given 5 extra hearts, full copper armor, 5 healing potions, a grappling hook, and a gold crown for appearance.
2 Mediumcore characters are the Knights.
Knights are given 2 extra hearts and 2 healing potions.

Each team has their own premade base that they set as their spawn

The king is not allowed to go underground, and must remain topside at all times (they kind of screw up that in the video for a bit, but mention it about halfway through). The mission for both teams is to kill the other team's king while protecting their own. The Knights are allowed to go underground to collect supplies.

Capture The Gem:

Two equal number teams of Medium Core characters

Capture the flag, basically.

Two teams, Red and Blue, each get half of the map to themselves.

10 minute planning period, in which you are allowed to do whatever you want to prepare your base. No crossing the midway point to the other team's side is allowed during this period.

Each team has a chest with a Ruby (for Red) and a Saphire (for Blue). The object of the game is to go to the other team's base, and capture their gem.

The first team to have both gems in their chest wins the game.

So, anyone got any interest in trying these out? If we get enough people who want to screw around, we can set up a time and date to do it, and I can start on building the bases for each team.

You may want to define what the different 'cores' mean. HP levels? Minimum gear types? Acceptable tools?

Or link us to something that gives us a sense of what you're actually asking us to do, in gameplay terms.

Sorry. When you make a character in the game, you have the choice between Softcore, Mediumcore, and Hardcore. It's actually part of the game's mechanics, it isn't a player induced challenge mode, it's actually built into the game.

Softcore = Money lost on death, able to respawn (standard character)
Mediumcore = Money and items all drop on death, but still able to respawn
Hardcore = 1 life. If you die, you drop everything and your character is deleted.

So, for Kill The King, the King is a hardcore character with extra health (we'd have to go underground and dig up some extra heart containers and do some preparation before the game on another character, you understand), and his two bodyguard Knights are Mediumcore.

This means that his knights can die repeatedly, but everytime they lose their items.

What we do is, we make a map, and slap a base for each team X meters away from spawn. Each base will have a bed in it so that each team's respawnable characters can spawn back at base instead of huffing it from the map's original spawn point.

The object of Kill The King is to protect your King and kill the other guy's king.

Capture The Gem is a much easier game mode: capture the flag, but the flag is a gem in a chest. You get 10 minutes to get resources together and reinforce your base, and when the timer is up, its fair game and teams are allowed to attack each other and try to steal each other's gem.

I think the only rule that I forgot to mention is No Dynamite or Bombs. Grenades would be okay, since they don't destroy the environment, they just cause harm to creatures and people. But if someone just dropped in and carpet bombed a base, it would kind of fuck up the whole spawn point for that team, you know?

Kill the king, the king is dead, long live the king.

I'm down for this.

Thanks. It's been a long time since I made a character, so I forgot about the soft-med-hard core stuff.

But still, any equipment restrictions for an initial test of this gametest? I'm certainly interested.

Everyone starts out completely fresh, but the king gets some 5 extra heart containers, 5 healing potions, a full copper armor set, grappling hook, and a gold crown that goes in the appearance slot so that we can identify him.

The knights get 2 heart containers, and 2 healing potions.

Everything else you're gonna have to dig up and build yourself.

I'm gonna say that we should do the same thing as the Capture the Gem style, and maybe make it to where we have like 5 or 10 minutes to go dig up some supplies or reinforce our bases, too.

I think each base should be equipped with a bed, an anvil, and a forge, just for the sake of simplicity.

We'll build both bases before the tournament starts, too, just to make it easier.

we had some luck playing a variation of the most dangerous game.
i've done a little thinking on it. how would this sound for a ruleset:

small map; drop on death character's only.

Hunter:
Code:
no armor. nobody ever went on safari in plate. a mining helmet is okay however.
you can bring whatever accessories you want. if the hunted kills you: the gear is theirs.
that is to say: bring expendable gear.

weapon choice is limited to:
flintlock pistol
handgun
musket
shotgun
harpoon
iron bow

item restriction:
no mirror
no boss summons
wooden arrow and flaming arrow only
musket ball and silver bullet only

Hunted:
Code:
armor:
same as hunter

any 5 accessories you want.

weapons:
blowgun
wooden bow
boomerang
spikey ball (thrown weapon)

item restriction:
no mirror
no hard mode boss summons
wooden arrow and flaming arrow only

The Hunt:
Code:
at sunrise the hunted is let loose and is given until sundown before the hunters set off.
the hunt ends after 3 days. this gives the hunters 4 nights to catch the hunted.
if the hunted manages either to evade or kill each hunter once: the hunted is the victor.
anyone that can accomplish this will be awarded some sort of prize.
any hunter that slays the hunted may choose to become the hunted next.

the hunt may take place on a stratum depth equal to half the number of hunters.
eg: 1 hunter = surface, 2 = dirt, 4 = rock, 6 = stone, 8 = hell.

each player shows up to the hunt with up to 5 accessories, up to 4 stacks of ammo, and 9 items in their hotbar. the backpack and armor areas are empty.

anything you find during the hunt is useable during the hunt; save for the mirror.

thoughts?

I think the hunted should be allowed some basic wiring tools, too, so they can make some traps. Maybe a couple of boulders, a stack of wire, wrench/wire cutter, and some pressure plates?

Also, there should be a win condition for the hunted. Maybe...if they can't find you within 3 or 4 days, you are free?

This stops you from getting ridiculously long drawn out games where nothing happens.

1) yes. there are no restrictions on block types mentioned. only restrictions on how much you can take with.
however you'd have to be pretty good at wiring. half a day's head start is not a ton of time. you're giving them time to run not time to build a base.

2) i agree. 3 day hunts sound good. ruled post edited.

I'm ashamed to say I've owned this game for probably 6 months at least, but have never even played a second of it. But these games types sound so fucking awesome. I need to quit dicking around in stupid games.

We'd just need to restart the map and make it not hardmode, so we could bring new characters on there and not have them get murderlated by the hard monsters.

I would've started hosting this on my own already, but I realized that playing as a hardcore character on a map that you're hosting that isn't on a dedicated server has some problems to it. Mainly, whenever you leave, the map leaves with you. :coookieesssss:

So, fresh map. Then we'd just need to build some bases on there for each team, basically. ezpz.

Cool, nobody be a fartknocker, let's keep this one off of Hard Mode. If we want to do hard mode, we can set up our own personal servers. :P
