i'm going to start running online PnP sessions online next week. this is not the thread about that. this is the thread about the required software to join up with the rest of the group, or, if you chose, host your own groups(will write the other technical bits upon request).

1)Ventrilo Client: http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php
for those word things we all say.

2)Minecraft Version 1.6.4 (latest recommended bukkit): http://www.technicpack.net/download
i'm pushing tekkit for it's easy version managment. select the vanilla pack on the left, click the little gear by it, set version to 1.6.4, save, launch. ezpz.

3)DropBox(email also viable): https://www.dropbox.com/
how this works: it creates a folder on my computer that is web accessible. you can share a link with other's via e-mail which they can access said folder from through their dropbox account. you do not need to share a folder to have an account. this is so everyone always has access to their character sheets: as does the DM. i'm using a character sheets directory in the public directory. if you so chose you can create your own folders in there to store any relevant materials. it also allows the DM to easily hand out materials to specific people as you can make directories private to specific members.
i'll ask for emails in a different thread.

more info later. the client setup should take about 10 minutes.

Do you actually need tekkit though? I can easily make a new profile on my regular launcher that is set to 1.6.4

honestly: i'd been using tekkit so long for this functionality that i didn't know it had been added to the regular launcher. so no. tekkit is not mandatory. regular launcher works just fine if you know how to do it. the server it's self is just a bukkit server at latest recommended build.

So, PnP session in Minecraft? How's that supposed to work and will it make the mark of the nerd appear on my forhead?

had a head-cold for a while that got in the way of finishing the spreadsheet. hence the delay.

basically: here's how it works. vent/some other form of voice communication for yelling at each other, and minecraft in place of a table mat. everyone plays in creative mode and moves their marker just as you would on a table mat. i also have a script for dice rolls. eg: //roll 6

why minecraft instead of something like roll20.com? 3d environments; faster map building than roll20.com, and i can swap maps a lot faster than either roll20 or tabletop. all in all; it's probably the best open grid out there.
