Okay, I have a Droid Eris, the first gen Droid...low end version. Anyways, I'm looking to finally upgrade after two years and really don't know which phone to get. I want a smartphone that at least has enough battery life to make it through an entire 14 hour day with 3G turned on. From what I've seen the best smartphone when it comes to apps, what you can do with it, and battery life is still the iPhone.

But does anyone have a droid razor or anything? Also, windows phone? Anyone got one? How be them?

edit: Also, is the Galaxy Nexus the same as the one they threw on all those commercials?

Added note: I'm a verizon customer so I'm kinda limited to their products. But I'm totally grandfathered into the unlimited data for $30 a month so BOOYAH!

Being someone who inherently mods/hacks/unlocks every single piece of consumer electronics I own, I'm extremely biased and loathe Apple products. Sure, you can jailbreak an iPhone, but it's the company as a whole that I dislike.

But I digress.

Samsung Galaxy S2 is you best bang for the buck. Not the very latest in smartphone tech, but it's probably one of the most well-rounded Android phone out there. The large OLED screen is amazing, the battery life fares better than my Samsung Galaxy Gio (which goes down to about 40% battery capacity after a 16-hour day) and the built-in cameras are surprisingly good. Plus, if you wish to do so, they can easily be rooted/unlocked.

I'm in Canuckistan, so I cannot provide any info on Verizon.

You also mentioned tablets? What would you like to know? I've got a 10.1" Motorola Xoom running on the latest Android OS, Ice Cream Sandwich.

I just figured a thread where both could be discussed would be good.

As for the Galaxy...is the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon the same as the Galaxy S2 on other carriers?...and I'm gonna be stupid. What can you exactly do with a rooted/unlocked smartphone?

No clue about the Galaxy Nexus...

As for rooting/unlocking a device, you can run rooted applications such as file explorers that give you access to previously inaccessible folders in the device's OS, where you can change the boot animation and sound. You can install custom roms and kernels that will allow you to use your phone as a wireless modem to tether your internet connection to your tablet, without getting charged extra by your wireless provider. The one rooted feature I use the most though is the ability to overclock/underclock the device according to the behavior it is in. For example, if your device has a 1GHz dual-core processor, you could have it automatically overclocked when playing games or videos, and have it underclocked for massive battery savings when the screen is off, then go back to normal frequency when it is either in use or plugged into AC or USB for charging.

There are tons of possibilities with a rooted device.

you can't get the Galaxy S2 on verizon, they opted out of the S2 release (even delayed the hell out of it here in the US) for exclusivity on the Galaxy Nexus (I won't even go into how they screwed up the release on that).

I own a Nexus and it's the best damn phone I've ever had, I for the most part, don't want to get another phone. It has no hardware buttons on the face of the phone and one of the largest screens and atm is the only phone that can display at 1280×720.

The reason why I say for the most part is because there are a few apps (ok games) that either don't work with my phone or work better on another phone and me being a gamer, I gotta have my fix haha. Tons of games work perfectly fine, but with no hardware keyboard it makes gaming a bit awkward for some games. Which is why I almost went for the Xperia Play. But In the end I am 100% completely happy with my phone and am not thinking of upgrading anytime in the future.

I live and work in an area that has 4g connections throughout the city. My battery just barely makes it if I charge it in the morning. I'm sure it'll do fine at 3g.

If you have any questions about the Galaxy nexus let me know, and I'll answer as best I can.

edit: If you do get a galaxy nexus make sure you read up on unlocking the phone's developer mode. Its a process that you should run first thing you get it because unlocking the phone's kernel is a required step towards rooting, and unlocking the kernel will wipe your phone clean. I found out about this about a week into owning my phone and I had too many things I didn't want to delete so I said screw it haha.

Also, I've been looking at an iPad. If I have a kindle and upgrade to an iPhone/Nexus (leaning toward Nexus...I like android's system) then is an iPad really necessary? I know it depends on personal life use....but I think I'd get enough out of it....possibly.

Any thoughts from people who have an eReader, phone, and the iPad? (Probably should just say: HEY BRADFORD READ THIS AND ANSWER!)

An Android tablet can do anything an iPad can do. Plus if you already have an Android phone, you can have the same apps on both devices. :\m/:

Gentlemen, let us marvel at our modern technology for a moment.

We now hold, in our hands, a piece of Star Trek technology. This device can interface with nearly any other piece of electronic equipment. It can take pictures, video, or sound clips and instantly transport them to anywhere on the planet. We can use it while seated in a chair flying in the fucking sky to watch live pictures of our destination city to see if we need to purchase an umbrella when we land. We can pilot a fucking helicopter remotely, AND take video of this flight.

We can watch porn on the interwebs while taking a shit.

So I get the phone next week and I'm down to the iPhone 4S or the Droid Razr Maxx, I don't think I can go wrong either way but....damn. Hard choice.

Well I don't want a phone. I want a hand-held computer that will suck my dick on command. So far, that's the only thing it won't do...

I got a Droid Razr Maxx. Holy shit. Really right now I'm just toying around with things but it is a definite improvement over my 1st gen droid. Live wallpapers kinda creep me out. Especially the one that shows you exactly where you are at that exact moment.
