fffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu, so I'd typed up a really long thing in the vent thread but I'm drunk and apparently I didn't copy and paste correctly and now it's gone instead of being moved to this thread as I intended.

Basically I was going to say that the only reason I focused on the Ron Paul thing so much is that I pretty much agree with your (Sleepy's) political views and whatnot, and the Ron Paul support is the one thing I find somewhat incongruous to my own, and somewhat baffling, but beyond that, I think what it comes down to is that you're totally right in saying that those in charge no longer have the citizenry's best interests at heart. Corporate influences have seen to that. I don't know if I can buy into the whole "handle things on a more local level" stance if only because historically in the U.S. state government has had a much worse track record with civil rights violations than the federal government, and in theory the purpose of a strong federal government is to establish and enforce the basic constitutional rights of the citizenry, superseding whatever happens at a state level. The fact that our federal government has failed to do so certainly calls for some sort of large-scale social and political upheaval on the part of progressives; we've seen a similar (and wholly ignorant) movement among conservatives in the past few years, and while initially winning the Republican party control of congress, it's now seeing a good amount of backlash, with the Republican primaries becoming somewhat of a bad joke. It would be awesome to see progressives (or moderates, or non-insane conservatives, or...anyone besides Republicans, really) take advantage of this backlash and start something substantial, but sadly that doesn't seem to be happening.
