when i heard 'get lucky' on the radio my first thought was:
"oh my fuck; they sold out hard"

is the rest of the album overdubbed with painfully trite lyrics too?

BAHAHAHAHAHA

I can't wrap my mind around the concept that "selling out" is something grown-ass people are actually concerned with.

Also, currently listening to a lot of Graveyard.

The track is great. There's a terrible irony to the fact that fans of Daft Punk think they're losing their uniqueness by not being afraid to do something radically different from their previous music. Like, you can't be a fan of a band known for experimentation and then get mad when every album they do isn't being experimental in the exact same way.

how is it that grown-ups shouldn't care when something iconic relinquishes integrity?
that would be like saying "lol faggot. who cares if [politician] sold out?. only children care about that."
children don't understand what selling out means.

i didn't care that they tried something different. i cared that the lyrics were trite as fuck.
when did i say anything about the sound of the music?
way to band wagon an old cliche into a strawman.

so how about answering a legitimate question? is or isn't the album riddled with painfully trite overdubbed lyrics like 'get lucky'?

I dunno, I haven't listened to the full album yet.

I just don't really buy that anyone has ever listened to Daft Punk for some sort of lyrical depth. The lyrics in virtually all of their songs that even have lyrics are forgettable and secondary to the music itself. If your complaint is that that track sounds too "pop-rock", whatever, you don't like that aesthetic, that's totally valid. But don't call it "selling out". That's a phrase everyone likes to throw around, and it's become meaningless, especially when you use it to refer to any stylistic change you don't like. "Get Lucky" was the song Daft Punk wanted to make, and they made it the way they wanted to make it. I can't think of any way that qualifies as "selling out."

But, from what I've gathered from my roommate, who has the album, no, most of the album is more standard Daft Punk fare.

my complaint is that the lyrics on the track are front and center and absolutely terrible. not that there are vocals.

their music style hasn't changed at all. they just slapped a bunch of shitty lyrics infront of music that sounded just like their last album.

what i was asking about was if that was just the radio friendly song on the album, or if the entire album was like that.

what they've done is made a disco album. That is it. They've made a disco album. They've done some interviews about it. This uses studio musicians from the 70s and 80s to record songs and just kind of go. I mean, I think Get Lucky is an awesome dance song that is great. Daft Punk even did an interview where they talked about how they wanted people in their field to not sound like Daft Punk so they decided to be the ones to do it since no one else will. They even said "people are going to fucking hate it"

They've done a pretty sweet job with making said disco/pop album. I love the thing.

i actually think disco is one of the most underrated and underutilized structures in music.

however, it doesn't need lyrics to be disco. and it doesn't have to use the 70s pallet to be disco either. disco is a structure not a specific sound.

personally speaking: awful lyrics ruin music for me. and good lyrics can make me enjoy music i didn't particularly enjoy. that's probably why i listen to so much instrumental and foreign music. most people seem to write lyrics like fucking wall-humping morons.

not the Bee Gees though.

poetry instead of looping a line equivalent to "i <3 fucking".

The new Bad Religion album, True North, came out in January but I still got it on heavy rotation. This is seriously the best stuff they did since No Control and Against the Grain. Seriously, this is the best freaking PunkRock in the last decade. I want to be buried with this album. The opener and title track is such a soaring Punk Anthem in capital letters, it soothes the soul.

What i've heard sounds like Human After All with the last remaining trace of Homework scrubbed off it. They "sold out" a long time ago (they didn't/who cares?). To me their talent lies in remixing their songs into long sets.

ok i'm gonna scroll down this page here and OH MY GOD WHAT IN THE BACKWARDS FUCK?
To quote millions of t-shirts and bumper stickers that appeared in response almost instantly (before it died the next week), Disco sucks. Have you ever actually looked it up? There's two splits in music from RnB in the early 60s that progressed, right? The first is the mainstream psychedelic rock > prog rock > electronica more or less. The second split, the BLACK ONE you RACIST (remember RnB comes from blues and jazz) is Rnb > black psychedelic rock > FUNK > rap. Disco is white funk for clubs and it is dreadful.

You have heard disco right? The lyrics are directions for dancing. KC of the sunshine band made millions by having choruses that were the song title repeated over and over.

List of most frequently used words in disco:
1. Get
2. Down
3. Up
4. Disco
5. Boogie

Take that 70s.

You obviously haven't heard this:

Any good quality in a disco track can be found better executed in funk. by George Clinton.

your knowledge music roll exceeds mine.

the underpinning structure i was getting at, following your chain, would then originate in funk and not disco at all.

but yes, 90% of disco tracks i've heard have sucked. hard. but you know what? main-stream country is ten times worse and it's mega popular here.

so maybe i should amend that " most people write lyrics like wall-humping morons" to "most people are wall-humping morons"

though none of this changes the fact, i think solidifies it, that Daft Punk just released an abysmally shitty album.

Very fair. There are a few elements of country music that can be executed really well (see lonesome cowboy burt). As far as I can tell there is only one solidly good disco track, and that's Disco Inferno. It's basically funk at a faster tempo.

I like the simple repetitive robot thing. The disco revival thing has been done better.

that Calvin Harris track slays.
my primary problem wasn't the sound of Daft Punk's music, but that the lyrical content of the album makes pop divas sound like intellectuals.

yes please. turn up the funk.
