i'm doing an open mic night on monday that's '90s themed, so i had to choose which songs to cover. it got me thinking, what's your favorite song/band to come out of the '90s? there's always the obvious answers (like nirvana or the smashing pumpkins), but what about the one hit wonders and bands that kind of faded into the background when the decade was done?

here's some of mine:

i really miss old everclear. they're still making music (apparently), but sparkle and fade was definitely their high point.

neutral milk hotel inspired so many bands, and yet they only ever released two albums. it'd be amazing if they reunited for some shows.

when i heard refused was reuniting for some shows i was unbelievably psyched, this band pioneered post-hardcore. i remember seeing this on mtv when i was a kid and all i could think was how i've never heard anything like it before.

what about you guys?

Spin Doctors, Space Hog, and Soul Asylum. Quintessential 90s music in my opinion that usually gets lost among all the Nirvanas, Pumpkins, Third Eye Blinds, "remember when Green Day was good"s and what have you.

90s music, you say?

(I sort of hate Oasis but even I admit they had some great stuff)

Edit: So I sort of missed the part where this was "What music from the 90s did you personally like that wasn't probably from big well known bands" and instead read this as "suggest things for me to play at this open mic". My bad. My issue there is I really didn't start listening to music until I was in high school, and for about three years didn't really listen to anything that wasn't from the 60s or 70s (besides the NESkimos :coookieesssss: ). I started getting into more recent music my senior year, which was 2008, so...I'm not sure the 90s had much of an impact on my musical tastes.

I also really enjoyed Coolio's singles and the All That album. :coookieesssss:

I want to say Everclear's AM Radio was a guilty pleasure but I think that came out right in the 2000-2001 timeframe?

ok, so the 90's are super popular now. (retro? really?)

but you know what? we lived through it. berlin wall, grunge, the end.

music in the 90s was shit. the 80s fucking ruined music, and the 90s was basically the death throes of rock music. so.... fuck that.

so uh i guess i'm going to vote for n64 music, because that fucking went somewhere.

I mean, popular music was awful in the 90s (when is it not?) but I think it's a bit overly dismissive to say good music didn't come out of an entire decade.

The 90s gave us Beck, Daft Punk (albeit their best work was after the 90s), Keb' Mo' (a severely underrated blues musician), and quite a few other very unique and talented musicians/bands. It's just that we were alive during the 90s and remember the cultural dominance of Nirvana in one obnoxious direction and Britney Spears/Boy Bands in the other. A few decades from now I think people will look at the 90s with a bit more fondness. Don't forget, during their time The Monkees consistently outsold and outcharted (or whatever the term would be for "were higher than on the charts) The Beatles. The general public always gravitates towards shitty commercialized music.

This is pretty much what I listened to in the 90s, didn't really listen to much else at the time.

t('-'t)

Alanis Morissette, Everclear, Cake, Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bush, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice In Chains, Primus, No Doubt and pre-American Idiot Green Day beg to differ.

Also, I like Third Eye Blind, Googoo Dolls, and Matchbox 20.

tl;dr: gargle my balls, I liked the 90s.

Stone Temple Pilots, Primus

both exceptions, and yeah there are a few talented people in that list but the world wouldn't miss much. 90s = angst. interesting bands and projects formed in the late 90s, but most came out early 2000s.

some stuff i liked in the early 2000s from the 90s:

and offspring, greenday and nirvana. pretty meh.

i've done this list before. Brian Jonestown Massacre was basically the only important band as far as good pop music is concerned, and all they did was play 60s music in the wrong decade.

"alternative" is a misnomer. the dominant counter-culture is rarely any better than the dominant culture, they're controlled by the same record labels. alternative rock was a huge industry. radiohead took the best route into the 00s and nirvana inspired a generation of hate filled people to pick up the guitar, past that i figure pop has a bigger influence.

Also man, have you never heard of Sonic Youth? :coookieesssss:

I begin to suspect I'm the only person on these boards who loves Beck.

Not really, besides a few songs of theirs on Rock Band 2.

Also, I like Beck, but I've only heard maybe about 3 or 4 of his songs.

You know, I honestly don't even give a fuck that he's a Scientologist. He's incredibly mellow about it and never talks about it and in general it just seems to be a thing he keeps in his personal life. Which is an approach to Scientology that I somehow doubt the church actually endorces, so that's cool.

Also, I loved his guest appearance on Futurama.
