In no particular order,

Jess and the Ancient Ones: Jess and the Ancient Ones

Odd Future: Odd Future Tape Vol. 2

Frank Ocean: Channel Orange

That Handsome Devil: The Jungle Book

Doc Delay and Godforbid: American Style Cardboard

Special mention goes to Kitty Pryde's "Haha, I'm Sorry", because even though I wouldn't say it was a "great" album by any means I was DAMN surprised by it and where it came from.

I didn't really think anything great came out except that Baroness album.

But lately I've switched genres from power to stoner metal, so I rediscovered Kyuss, Ghost, Mustasch, etc

Then you should definitely give Jess and the Ancient Ones a listen.

Looking at the stuff I've gotten into this year, turns out most of it came out in 2011. Oh well.

Since there's 2 albums that actually came out in 2012 that I listened to, here's my top 2:

Not a great year for me and music. I'm sure I'll catch up by next year, only to find that I forgot to listen to 2013 music.

I too need to update. Just discovered Thank You Scientist and their 2012 release, Maps of Non-Existent Places.

Ridiculous seven-piece jazz-fusion prog whatever metal:

Actually, put that in 2nd place for me, bump Coheed to 3. Thanks for reminding me.

His older stuff is pretty good, but the rest of the stuff on the album with gangnam style is mediocre

yes, because not only can i not tell the difference between a single and an album, i love it when people make simple super sine synth lines and put a sidechain compression on it with the kick, combined with a heavy handed through-a-brick-wall EQ filter, not to mention singing in a language i don't understand except for a chorus of "Hey sexy lady".

sarcasm aside, it is my daughters favourite song from a year I've thus far found is fairly devoid of good releases. There has been a big shift towards electronic cross-over genres this year, which is good for pop. Electro has basically become a sort of techno-dubstep, which is not so good, and Daft Punk still hasn't released anything with Nile Rodgers. The sampling of whole songs is still running rampant, rock is still dead, metal is still oblivious, good aussie hip-hop is still obscured by an abundance of crap aussie hip-hop, and people still don't know what trance means or what the 60s sounded like.

All in all an uninspiring year, I have higher hopes for 2013.

I have some top songs for the year that mostly came out decades ago. Here's a list why not:

ELO - Showdown
Frank Zappa - Peaches En Regalia OR G-Spot Tornado, I haven't decided.
Funkadelic - (Not Just) Knee Deep
Jesus Christ Superstar - Heaven on Their Minds (JCS songs refer to the versions in the film, not the OST or other verions)
Jesus Christ Superstar - Then We Are Decided + This Jesus Must Die
Jesus Christ Superstar - Damned for All Time/Blood Money + Judas's Death
Jesus Christ Superstar - Superstar
Seth Sentry - Lazy
Seth Sentry - Simple Game
The Zombies - She's Not There

There that's ten.

or you know, twelve or fourteen.
