Okay, I know this is Heathenism, but here goes:

Napalm Man’s NESsay – Sonic the Hedgehog 2

By branching off into music from the Sega Genesis, the NESkimos will vastly increase their available music library, while remaining true to the sixteen-bit-or-less era of games. Dr Wily has discussed covering music from PC games (http://www.neskimos.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2229), so why not Sega Genesis as well?

Should the NESkimos venture into the realm that is the Sega Genesis, the game that needs to be covered is Sonic the Hedgehog 2. This was one of the ground-breaking games that pushed the console to its limits, immediately replacing Sonic 1 as the pre-bundled game (remember those?). This also set the general design for all future Sonic games: More emphasis on speed rather than puzzles, unlike Sonic 1. Sonic was Sega’s mascot, a fast, in your face attitude to compete directly with Nintendo’s (fairly plump) Mario. I believe certain songs from this game deserve a take by the NESkimos.

Emerald Hill Zone – This song would be one of the more recognizable songs, as it’s the first stage in the game. It’s the very opening of an awesome game, and contains one of the most kickin’ basslines I have ever heard, from game or otherwise. I think a fast, hard rock version of this would be very cool, especially with the awesome bass going on.

Chemical Plant Zone – Is there any other song that screams “Rock me out, please!” as much as this one? I believe not. The very start has an awesome little tease, then a simplistic yet rockin’ bassline, then the full sound explodes in. After some grooving, in comes the breakdown and build up. Imagine this song with a heavy metal guitar doing lead, with perhaps another guitar doing background? Guitars abound! This song calls for more rockage than any other song in this essay.

Aquatic Ruin Zone – I used to not be a big fan of this song, the stage it’s associated with is a pain in the ass. Listening to this song on its own, though, I’ve realized how cool and laid-back it is. From the very start, with a short, almost-missable bass pick up, this song is a real treat to listen to. The very short intro segues into a nice, groovin’ tune, with a very moving bass part. I believe that this song, done as a latin dance song, would kick major ass, and be a great way for the NESkimos to experiment with other genres.

Casino Night Zone – My favorite stage in the game. Casino Night had you running around a giant Casino (who’da thunkit?), with bright colors, slot machines, and other goodies. This game introduced the gambling for rings concept, which was used again in Sonic and Knuckles, and once again in Sonic Adventure for Dreamcast. It all started with this zone. If the NESkimos were looking to do a jazzier tune, this would be the one to do, by far.

Hill Top Zone – A very laid-back, easy going tune, with some awesome moments for a good-old fashioned breakdown. I believe this tune, sped way up, would be a very awesome hard rock song, with a wailing lead guitar and some kickin’ bass. I’ve included a concept MIDI for this song, I just sped up the original and changed the lead’s instrument. This would be an awesome feature song for Shredder, maybe.

Mystic Cave Zone – The epitome of cool. The bassline is once again, a very awesome moving bassline. This song would be done very awesomely with some horns, similar to how it already is. I think if you kicked this song’s tempo up a notch, added some heavy metal guitar, this has serious potential for rockage.

Metropolis Zone – One of the final Zones of the game, this stage had you running through this factory, it was one of the most pain in the ass stages of the game. It’s many a Sonic fan’s favorite stage, it was one of the biggest and longest in the game. I believe getting a time bonus in this zone was impossible. The bassline isn’t as rockin’ as the other songs, but the general feel of it is still awesome, something of a throwback to the ‘80s. Once again, with a sped up tempo, combined with the NESkimos’ ability to rock, this song has definite rockage potential.

Death Egg Zone – Holy crapping God, this song is this… chaotic piece, which I believe the NESkimos could glorify into one of the most amazing tunes ever. It is a bit weird and different, but that’s what gives it its charm. I imagine the main melody being done with variations in the bass and drums section, or even with variations to the melody. On the whole, this song sounds creepy, which is very fitting for the final Zone of the game.

In summation: Games from the NES and SNES are growing in short supply, and I believe a great way to increase the NESkimos’ potential music library is to expand into the Sega Genesis market. The Sonic series of games have awesome music, as do games like Toejam and Earl, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, and Altered Beast, just to name a few. In retrospect of writing this essay, Altered Beast and Golden Axe might have better tunes for rocking to, however, Sonic 2 is a great game to burst into the Genesis scene with. This game revitalized the Sonic the Hedgehog series, and gave Nintendo a serious run for its money during the great console wars. Without competition from the Genesis, and Sega in general, the video game scene would be very different today, probably nowhere near as good. In fact, the Genesis is what got Nintendo up and moving to release a 16-bit system, their original plans were to ride out the NES as long as they possibly could before releasing the SuperNES. While Nintendo and Sony did essentially kill Sega during the Nintendo 64, PlayStation, and Saturn era, I feel it’s important to pay tribute to Sega’s glory days, the short period where they owned over 50% of the market share of consoles, the days of the almighty Sega Genesis.

Ok...first off....before anyone starts some flamage, the songs that Napalm requested are actually really good (besides aquatic zone). Granted, it is the NES--kimos and it seems like heresy, but the Genesis did have major influence over the video game industry dring the 90's (me mysely having one) rivaling the SNES. I think it would be good for the NEskimos to diverge their music a little to include some other systems, because the NES & SNES weren't the only things that had some kickass music to it. On a last though, how about some coverage from Bible Adventures! J/K. Later

All I'm sayin' is that Sonic 2 has some awesome music, and why should the NESkimos limit themselves to just Nintendo systems? I know the have NES in their name, but, lot of Genesis games had AWESOME music, and I'm sure a lot of us fondly remember playing the crap out of these games, which is more or less the whole point of the NESkimos, so, why not do it?

Dr Wily wrote:
I don't have my dick buried deep enough in video game elitism to care if Snake's Revenge was an American offshoot from the series and isn't even considered canon. The import thing is that I played the shit out of it when I was a kid and it had some of the best NES music ever. It's going to make a great metal medley.

Whatever dude. I personally don't give a fuck, but I would much rather hear music from a Nintendo system, since those are what I played as a kid. Also, I sinceriously doubt that the NESkimos are going to switch over and cover Sega tunes, so write all you want about it.

OMG! Aqua Teen Hunger Force isn't from an NES Game! Nor is Star Wars's Cantina Song! THE MADNESS HAS ALREADY BEGUN!!!!1 THE END IS NEAR! DEAR ALMIGHTY FATHER IN HEAVEN, THE END IS NEAR!!!!11

*opens his mouth to scream but slaps himself in the face before he can and calms down*

Phhhhwww! Ok, deep breaths, David. Deeeeeep breaths.

Even tho I didn't ever really play Sonic when I was a kid, I say if his essay wins we give it a shot, cuz let's face it, anything the NESkimos do will be great, regardless of what system it's on. Besides, they've done SNES stuff, but they don't call themselves the Sneskimos, and they've done Cantina of Fear, but they don't call themselves the We're-doing-a-cover-of-something-that's-not-really-out-of-a-game-its-actually-out-of-a-movie-but-it-kicks-ass-anywayskimos either. My point is, Neskimos is just a name, and although it mainly points out that they are a band that masters mainly in covers of NES songs, there's still room to grow on their behalf if they want to do anything else. Besides, Wily was talkin about doing some PC stuff, too, so even the Neskimos themselves are thinking about branching off from just Nintendo-ness. They're a video game cover band, and not even all of their songs are off of video games.

It's all about taking a good song that was catchy/cool/memorable from beforehand and shoving a big symbolic Official Scrabble Word Of The Day of Rock N' Roll up it's ass.

...and then there was Sonic... I agree with the fact that any game you loved playing is good enough to cover, so I won't flame anyone, or toss shit at the band. I love you guys too much for that kind of immaturity. It is a big change though, from just Nintendo systems to SEGA, but if you think about it, SEGA really isn't it's own system anymore... whether that means anything or not.

...uh... yeah... more power to ya, but I don't recommend doing too much more of it...

Goddammit. If you were right next to me, Nameless, I'd punch you in the mouth. Since you're not, I owe you one.

And how the hell did that "essay" win? It's not 1000 words (though most of the essays aren't), and it doesn't even talk about covering a game's music, it just says how great the NESkimos are, no matter what they do. Way to suck Wily's cock for a paragraph and a half, Dave. :x

I DID write the original Sonic Essay, which is right a bit past 1000 words, so, I guess it was decided with Nameless88's Paragraph and a half as like, an extension? That's what I figured.

Either way, I AM STOKED!!!!!!!!!

Wow....the NESkimos doing Sega songs...how cool is that. Well, I'm primed to hear what the band will put out there. I had an idea, and I thought it was pretty cool so here goes. I'm kinda adding on to Napalms essay here. I thought it would be awesome if the band did a version of Death Egg, but make it like Nine Inch Nails-ish industrial metal . (Like Norfair Tenement). It would sound pretty awesome I think. It's just an idea, so yeah.....Anyway, I gotta hit the books, exams are comin up

Hi, yet once again. So I just looked at the posts, and saw what Stank wrote. He seems kinda pissed that they're gonna do a Sega song. what's the big deal. All great bands diversify their styles, because those who don't grow stagnant and decay. Napalm wrote an awesome essay, and Nameless did a good job of adding on to it. BTW, was the whole Wily thing really necessary. We all know that Nameless dreams about it, but please. J/K Nameless. Anyway you look at it, Napalm won fair and square, and did a damn good job at it. Later, y'all.

PS - You know you want some Bible Adventures coverage :D

Heh....I was just fuckin' with you guys. I just really liked Nameless's way with words...especially when he's talking about dildos, which he seems to do with the sort of poetic passion that might disturb me if only I didn't SHARE THAT PASSION. For dildos.

Anyway, 3 winning essays remain, and will be decided all at once when the official judging takes place. And for the record, we'll play Sega songs if that's the way the essay cookie crumbles. Mario would like that.....he had a Sega as a kid and has been begging to do Sega songs ever since we started.

.....symbolic Official Scrabble Word Of The Day of rock.....tee hee!

Nothing happens NOW. All those "for now"s are for whenever they judge the essays. I take back all the bad stuff I said, until the essays get read and Napalm's wins, when I say them all over again, and he can then cream his pants all over again. But, for now, we wait....For now.

Hey, Stank, I wasn't submitting an essay. I was just trying to get you and Napalm to stop flinging shit at each other like a bunch of rabid primates. *Read the rest of the topic thus far, so is up to speed on everything, just felt like clearing that all up tho*

I will, however, submit another essay in a little bit, so gimme a little while and I'll post one on here.

Oh, but since I sorta won, can you guys do a cover of Super Mario World's Starroad (it'd sound so awesome done with a jazz sort of style to it), Super Mario Brother 3's End Theme or SMB3's Underwater music? K thx bie
