Like....is Halo worth doing even though everyone likes it (even, begrudgingly, me)? Is Metal Gear Solid too sacrosanct to fuck with? Also, which track from Quake 2 rocks the motherfucking hardest?

note: full-playback means music that's pre-recorded in a studio using live (or not) instrumentation, and played back during the game as a sound file. It's the difference between, say, Playstation and Genesis. Consoles up to 3rd generation used onboard synthesis to generate the sounds at runtime, which is why you can use Nintendos and Gameboys as musical instruments now--all you're doing is sending musical instructions to the synth chip like the game code does. Not to be confused, either, with MIDI music from VGA-era PC games, which works exactly the same way, only with a Soundblaster sound card instead of an onboard oscillator chip. However, some CD-ROM PC games from that time used full-playback by playing the sound files that were on the CD-ROM, like Quake (which was why you could pop the Quake CD into a CD player and listen to the songs; they were stored in CD audio format).

Umm. That was long. And glib. How about: full-playback means music that sounds pretty as opposed to video-gamey.

I think he means, non-synthesized-at-runtime.

I'm assuming Doom counts, too?

The Imp's Song (E1m2)

Slow intro, but I like it, cuz it's the bass doing the melody.

Honestly, Doom has so much freakin good music in it, I'd love you guys if you did any from it.

Also, maybe a selection from Fallout? They have some good background music in parts of it.

Oh, or Diablo's Tristram music.

I'm guessing full playback games means you can play it all the way through again and not get sick of it, right? Because there isn't one single set of things you can do in the game, but it's open to roam with a set storyline? I might just be misinterpretting you here.

I second LoZ:OoT or Majora's Mask. Either has great music, hell, most of it are the same songs.

I think he means one of those new fangled games where all the music isn't bleeps and bloops, like all cd based games and such

I agree. You could make Snake Eater (even in it's Bond-esque cheese) into a pretty brutal industrial piece, I think. Choking a whisper of "I'm still in a dream, Snake Eater" actually sounds decent in my head. It could work (then again you might die of ghey). The alert music from MGS1 might be a better choice, or even the Sons of Liberty theme.

But if that ain't your cup of tea, maybe Morrowind or Oblivion? I think the Oblivion theme is pretty rockable. Lot's of variation to it too. Morrowind is a little less palatable, I think, but it could be worth a shot.

I say no on Halo. The song is awesome, but it's been done. To death. Maybe a different sound off of the soundtrack. A bossa nova version of "Peril" would be cool.

But I think some of my favorite full playback tunes have been out of Final Fantasy. Now that gives me the idea to suggest One Winged Angel, but AC did a pretty rockin' version of that. I still think it has potential, though.

I'm sure I'll think of more later.

To be specific, Guilty Gear XX #: The Midnight Carnival.

If anyone has piano skills, Writhe in Pain would be bitchin'. Otherwise, Primal Light is a pretty sweet track.
