the fill bucket is kinda vestigial. it only works properly when you have full pixels(ie: not blended; as in the jaggy pencil). there is an option where you can select the inside of your fill shape with the magic wand tool, then expand that selection by a few pixels and fill that selection in a new layer. it doesn't always turn out right though. straight pixel art is about the only place where you'll really want to use it.

some combination of manual for depth/pen for base tones is your best bet. the fill bucket is probably the messiest way you can handle it if you have a tablet.

if you really want to use a fill effect: use fill selection instead.

also: never, ever, ever colorize your outline layer. use lots and lots of layers. group them to keep things organized.

From here on out I intend to use "fill selection" and the brush to paint in for coloring. I used the fill bucket, again, because I was kind of in a hurry and wanted a big picture idea of color coordination. Most of the photoshop stuff I've been posting hasn't been "This is my best stuff!" and more "Am I doing this right?"
I fully intend on using the tools available to do the best work, unless it's crunch time and deadlines are coming, but right now I'm just trying to get an understanding of if I'm doing this right and what I can do to improve them when I do get to the point of improving them.

I'm strangely comfortable with this comparison.

Still comfortable with that idea. :coookieesssss:

So my coloring experiment did not work. I have tomorrow off from work and a few drawings I'm working on. I will update when I have something completed with notes on how said item was produced and questions on how it appears.

Also, I need to to find a good Gears of War 3 joke before Thursday...

More work in GIMP:
Image

Finally got some smoother lines using a combination of higher dpi and their brush tool. Only problem was a set of transparent pixels so I had to use a darker solid background to make it look anything like good. Lines do look better but I need to find a way to make smooth lines without the additional clear pixels.

Yeah yeah yeah, Photoshop is God and GIMP is shit. I was just trying to see if I could get similar results. Apparently I can't. Like I said, it was an experiment and not all experiments work.

Although I might be getting something that will greatly help everything...

And here's something recently done in Photoshop. I have learned some things:

i wouldn't say gimp is shit. if you compare it to MSpaint its fantastic. however, photoshop is just one of those things where there's really no reason not to use it. it does just about everything an art program possibly can do and it does all of those things extremely well. its probably the most well developed piece of software i've seen. it should be though. adobe has been working on it for ages.

the reason above all others why you should be using it is your tablet. with any other art program you're not really going to get much else out of it aside from a freehand mouse cursor.

There are just certain things you can do in gimp that make sense. You can zoom in and move the canvas without having to switch to separate tools and separate settings for those tools. That makes sense.

Like I said, I've been using the program for yonks and I might be getting something that will change everything. Also it was an experiment.

I thought those lighter green parts in that first panel were ticks, as if to say "Yep, this part is good, this part too"

Photoshop is great, but I still love MSpaint.

you don't need to change tool for that. holding alt when you scroll zooms. holding shift scrolls up/down. holding ctrl scrolls left/right. moreover, when zoom like that it zooms to where your cursor is. like i said: ask specific questions and you'll get specific answers. there's not much in the way of basics. if you want to know if there is a way to do something; ask. photoshop makes a lot of sense. you're probably just feeling overwhelmed. there's a lot of meat on them bones.

I knew about the keystrokes but those still don't seem "intuitive" to me. gimp has a zoom percentage drop down constantly at the bottom that will go to any percentage and the move canvas function is mapped to the tablet pen. Simple. Photoshop either has separate tools or keystrokes. That just doesn't seem to make as much sense to me.

Again, I'm not trying to say PS is bad. It's good. Damn good. There's a lot of stuff I wouldn't be able to do with out it.

it has that too. on the menu pull down Window and click Navigator. you can move the camera around there too if you're not a hot key person.

i just prefer zooming with the scroll because i'm constantly jumping back and forth between 300% and 100%. i have a key bound to 100% zoom. key out to see how it looks, analogue in to where i'll be detailing next.

Flogging a dead horse:

I haven't worked out my comic system yet (traditional inking), but I usually have outlines on a transparent layer, then I draw a shape with the lasso that is completely inside the line and fill that on a different layer (my fill bucket is always set to 100%). Then you just make sure your outline is on top.

By using shapes on a layer you don't include in the final picture, you can make shapes with the selector tools to make lines with a width of 0, ie, shading, or other places where you would fill with colour and not have an outline.

Because I work with raster, I'm working at a much higher resolution than the finished product. Having smooth shapes and lines on transparent layers takes a bit of getting used to, but it's a general rule of thumb that the bigger you work the better it will scale down - I use a calculator to keep the dimensions in proportion. Just as scaling up blends in places where two colours meet, scaling down can absorb the problems that arise when your pixels are just too darn big. Constraining the colour palette to only what colours you want to display is very useful for cartoons.

Hey look! An action pose!

Tried experimenting with a different color scheme as well. I prefer her with gloves on and red hair, but the red suit doesn't look bad. I still like the indigo one but not if she's just Capt. Falconess.

Although I started to color a brunette with a green suit but stopped. Now I know why:

You know what? Fuck it. I'm sticking with red and indigo/blue. Everybody like the green goggles? Green goggles work?

So... did you ever try the brush tool out in GIMP? It looked like you were using pencil, then switched to PS, still used pencil, then switched to brush.

I'm a retard please ignore.

Anyways, I hate to see poor old The GIMP not get any love. I'm not an artist, so I don't use it much except for basic resizing, cropping, fucking with s-curves, that sort of thing.

But, it seems like other people manage to do interesting things with it?

http://the-gimp.deviantart.com/#/d3brv9b

So, food for thought. I don't think it replaces Photoshop, but, y'know. It does do a hell of a lot.

Have you read anything I've said in this thread? I give nothing but love to gimp. I love all up on gimp. It's been putting up pictures of engagement rings it likes because of all the love I've been sharing with it.

Also, soon to update with more art. Need to finish coloring but day job calls.

Well, I was referring more to S1eepy's "If you compare it to MSPaint, it's fantastic." Like, c'mon. It shouldn't be held up against MSPaint. Making that comparison's just mean to The GIMP. Poor guy.

It's not photoshop, but for a lot of people, it does quite a bit of what photoshop can do. It's just a different tool, is all. I've seen awesome things made in GIMP, and I've seen shit things made in Photoshop. It's a poor workman that blames the tools.
